Overview
Telaga Waja River Bali is located in Rendang District, Karangasem Regency, East Bali. It is the second largest river in Bali after the Ayung River and also the longest river in Karangasem Regency. The river’s water source originates from several mountain springs at the foot of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest and holiest mountain, such as the Lipang, Arca, and Telaga Waja springs, as well as smaller springs like the Yeh Sah River. Its water flow is large and stable throughout the year, making it managed for the local community’s drinking water needs.
Geographically, the Telaga Waja River flows from the slopes of Mount Abang towards southern Bali, passing through the village of Rendang, and emptying into Klungkung Regency. Its environment is dominated by a tropical rainforest climate with an average annual temperature of around 24°C and high rainfall, which supports the river’s natural ecosystem and the beauty of its surroundings.
This river is very popular as a whitewater rafting destination in East Bali. The Telaga Waja River rafting route spans approximately 14–18 kilometres with varying levels of rapids (grade 3–4), offering a challenging experience alongside stunning natural scenery, including terraced rice fields, cliffs, and small waterfalls. Rafting activities here are the main attraction, drawing many tourists who wish to enjoy water sports while admiring the panoramic views of Mount Agung and the surrounding natural landscape.
In addition to being a tourist attraction, the Telaga Waja River also plays an important role in the lives of the community, both as a source of irrigation for rice fields and as a supply of drinking water managed by PDAM Karangasem. Some of its springs, such as Lipang, have been technologically utilised for the distribution of drinking water to the population.
